Serial casting is indicated for patients who are at risk for the development of contractures. The goal of serial casting is to gradually increase range of motion and prevent further loss of motion, especially in patients who have already experienced some degree of joint immobility. Patients who are responding well to facilitated stretching or who already have close to normal range of motion would not require serial casting. Patients who are very agitated and cannot tolerate stretching would require alternative interventions.
