This is a well-established fact that all cases of paralytic polio acquired in the US between 1980 and 1999 were vaccine-associated paralytic polio (VAPP) caused by the oral polio vaccine developed by Albert Sabin. This was because the live, weakened virus in the vaccine could, in rare cases, mutate and cause polio. Since then, there has been a shift to the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) which does not carry the same risk.
