Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are a class of proteins that play a key role in the innate immune system. They recognize structurally conserved molecules derived from microbes. Once these molecules are recognized, TLRs activate immune cell responses, including the transmission of signals to the cell's nucleus to induce the expression of genes involved in immune responses. Thus, they both recognize specific "danger" molecules and transmit messages to the cell's nucleus. They are not cytokines, nor are they part of the adaptive immune system, which is characterized by antigen-specific responses and memory.
