Dimitri Ivanowsky was the first person to demonstrate the existence of viruses. In 1892, he found that a disease affecting tobacco plants could be transmitted from infected plants to healthy ones using a filter that allowed bacteria to pass through but retained something much smaller that still caused the disease. This "something" was later identified as a virus.
