Antiviral medications should be started within 72 hours of the onset of lesions in order to decrease the severity and duration of symptoms and prevent complications. Waiting until after the lesions have dried and crusted may not be as effective in reducing symptoms and complications. Starting antiviral therapy within 96 hours is also beneficial, but starting within 72 hours is preferred.
