Antibodies are specific proteins produced by the body's immune system in response to the presence of an immunogen (e.g. a virus or bacterium). Antibodies can bind to the immunogen, allowing other immune cells to recognize and destroy it. Therefore, antibodies can both bind to an immunogen and target it for destruction. This is part of the specific immune response, as opposed to the nonspecific immune response which includes physical and chemical barriers like the skin and mucous membranes, as well as white blood cells like neutrophils and macrophages.
