Briefly evaluate the assertion that adolescence is a time of turmoil.
G. Stanley Hall proposal that the adolescent years were characterized by convulsive instability and disturbing inner turmoil and Erik Erikson's, argument that the key challenge of adolescence was to form a clear sense of identity. The answer should also discuss increases in adolescent suicide rates, attempted suicides and school violence that have been observed in recent decades and how they appear to provide support for Hall's claim. It should go on then to discuss the fact that recent evidence suggests that school violence has been stable since 1980 and that when accurate data is examined, it suggests that adolescent suicide rates may actually be a little lower then those for older age groups.
