X-linked recessive diseases are caused by mutations on the X chromosome. Females have two X chromosomes, so they can carry two copies of the mutant allele, but they only need one normal copy of the gene to produce enough of the functional protein to function normally. Males, on the other hand, have only one X chromosome and one Y chromosome, so if they inherit the mutant allele, they have no other copy to fall back on, and will likely show signs of the disease.
