Receptors can respond to various physical or chemical changes in their environment, such as light, pressure, temperature, or chemicals. Receptors also exhibit a threshold phenomenon, whereby they respond more readily to their adequate stimulus, which is the specific type of stimulus that the receptor is best adapted to detect. Receptors are typically located at the peripheral endings of afferent neurons, which are responsible for carrying sensory information from the receptor to the central nervous system.
