Hemoglobin is a protein made up of four highly folded polypeptide chains and four iron-containing nonprotein, nitrogenous groups, which are responsible for its ability to bind and transport oxygen. Hemoglobin appears reddish when combined with oxygen and bluish when deoxygenated, due to changes in the conformation of the protein. However, hemoglobin can also bind with other gases, such as carbon dioxide and nitric oxide.
