Islam was the religion that controlled much of present-day Spain until 1492, during the period known as Al-Andalus. This ended with the Reconquista, a long period of Christian conquests which culminated in the completion of the Catholic Reconquest with the fall of the Kingdom of Granada. Since then, Islam has not had political control over any significant portion of Spain.
