Erythrocytes, also known as red blood cells, are specialized cells that transport oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. They contain a high concentration of hemoglobin, which binds to oxygen and gives the cells their characteristic red color. In fact, over 97% of the cell's contents are hemoglobin. Erythrocytes do not contain mitochondria or any other organelles, and they do not have a nucleus. They are produced in the bone marrow and circulate in the blood for about 120 days before being removed and replaced by new cells. Erythrocytes do not have the ability to fight against foreign antigens, as this is a function of the immune system.
