Reduced enamel epithelium is a layer that covers the tooth during its eruption process as a protective measure. Once the tooth has erupted, the reduced enamel epithelium is usually sloughed off, leaving only the enamel surface. Therefore, it protects the enamel surface during tooth eruption. It does not protect the enamel surface from bruxism, the forces of mastication or aggressive tooth brushing.
