The Wars of the Roses were a series of battles between the House of Lancaster and the House of York for control of the English crown. The conflict arose from disputes over the succession to King Henry VI, who was from the House of Lancaster. The House of York believed they had a stronger claim to the throne, and so began a struggle that led to years of fighting and political instability known as the Wars of the Roses. Eventually, the House of Tudor emerged victorious under King Henry VII, who united the two houses by marrying Elizabeth of York.
