On physical examination, serous edema is noted, and the turbinates usually appear pale with a smooth, glistening surface. Nasal polyps appear as smooth, pale gray nodules which are overgrowths of mucosa most commonly caused by chronic allergic rhinitis and often cause absence of sense of smell and a sensation of a "valve that moves" in the nose when breathing.
