Secretion means that substances move from the blood to the filtrate. This allows the body to maintain homeostasis and move unneeded substances back into the filtrate. Urea moves back to the filtrate in the Henle loop. As the filtrate moves through the distal tubule and collecting duct, more adjustments are made. Ammonia (NH₃), certain drugs, hydrogen (H⁺), and potassium (K⁺) move from the blood into the filtrate. The movement of potassium into the filtrate can be caused by aldosterone.
