The ASGW Professional Standards for the Training of Group Workers recommend a minimum of 10 hours of group counseling as a participant and a minimum of 20 hours of group counseling as an observer, plus a minimum of 300 hours of group counseling as a leader or co-leader. Additionally, the counselor must have supervised experience in group work. While being a member or certified by ASGW, or having taken graduate courses and completed an internship in group work can be helpful, they are not necessary requirements for competence in group work.
