A page fault occurs when the required page is not present in the main memory and needs to be fetched from the secondary storage. Before fetching the page from secondary storage, the processor needs to know the physical address of the page, which is obtained through the translation lookaside buffer (TLB). If the required page is not present in the TLB, a TLB miss occurs which is then followed by a page fault. Therefore, a page fault must be preceded by a TLB miss.
