Much of the carbon dioxide dissolved into Earth's oceans, where it reacted with water to form carbonic acid. This in turn reacted with minerals in the ocean to form insoluble calcium carbonate, which was deposited on the ocean floor as sediment. This process, known as weathering, removed much of the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and helped to regulate the Earth's climate over long timescales.
