The People's (or Populist) party emerged in the late nineteenth century as a response to farmer's discontent and the belief that their interests were being ignored by the political establishment in the North and East. The party advocated for policies such as the direct election of senators, a graduated income tax, and the free coinage of silver, all of which were seen as benefiting the lower and middle classes.
