The export of food crops from the Americas, such as corn and potatoes, enabled a population explosion in Europe as they were able to support larger populations and provide better nutrition. These crops were considered far more valuable than gold or silver, which were also being exported from the Americas. The export of cattle and pigs also occurred, but was not the primary focus of the Columbian Exchange. Rice and wheat, however, were already known in Europe before the Columbian Exchange.
