While atmospheric nitrogen is abundant, few organisms can use it directly. Soil bacteria, however, can convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form that is usable by plants, known as ammonia. This process is called nitrogen fixation. The plants then take up the ammonia through their roots, incorporating into their tissues, and the nitrogen is passed on through the food chain.
