While the Modoc War (1872-1873) was relatively small compared to other conflicts between Native Americans and the United States government, it was still a violent and deadly affair. At least 65 Modoc men, women, and children were killed during the war along with several members of the US military and civilian volunteers. The Modoc leader, Captain Jack, was eventually captured and hanged, and the surviving Modocs were forced onto a reservation in Oklahoma.
