Classical conditioning involves pairing a neutral stimulus with another stimulus (known as the unconditioned stimulus) that produces a reflexive or unconditioned response. Over time, the neutral stimulus (now known as the conditioned stimulus) alone can produce the same response as the unconditioned stimulus. This process can be seen in Pavlov's famous experiment where he paired the sound of a bell (neutral stimulus) with the presentation of food (unconditioned stimulus) which ultimately led to the dog salivating (unconditioned response) to just the sound of the bell (conditioned response).
