In a hinge joint, a flexor muscle moves the insertion (the bone that moves) toward the origin (the stationary bone). This produces flexion at the joint. An extensor muscle moves the insertion away from the origin, producing extension at the joint. The contraction of only one of these muscle groups is needed to produce movement at the joint. Movement in three dimensions is not possible in a hinge joint. The flexor and extensor do not need to expand at the same time, only one needs to contract.
