If the universe were infinite in age and filled with an infinite number of stars, then no matter where you looked in the sky, your line of sight would eventually end at a star, and the entire night sky would be as bright as the surface of the Sun. However, the universe has a finite age, which means that light from some of the most distant stars and galaxies has not yet had enough time to reach us. Therefore, there are regions of the universe where no light has yet had time to reach us, and this creates the effect of darkness in the night sky. This phenomenon is known as Olbers' paradox, named after German astronomer Heinrich Wilhelm Olbers.
