One of the major developmental tasks for toddlers is toilet training.Readiness for toilet training is evident by the ages of 18 to 24 months (girls tend to be ready to toilet train earlier than boys)when the following are present: voluntary control of the anal and urethral sphincters; motor skills of sitting,walking,and squatting; fine motor skills needed to remove clothing; cognitive skills of recognizing the urge to defecate or urinate and verbalizing the urge to do so; and willingness and ability to please the parents by sitting on the toilet for 5 to 10 minutes.Myelination of the spinal cord and development of sphincter muscle control occur at about 12 to 18 months.These must be complete prior to beginning bowel and bladder training.
