J-receptors, also known as pulmonary J receptors or juxtapulmonary-capillary receptors, are located in the alveolar walls close to the capillaries in the lungs. When stimulated, for example by pulmonary edema, pulmonary emboli, or pneumonia, they can cause a reflex increase in the breathing rate but with shallower breaths.
