Roman religion began with the gods of the household, known as the dii penates and lares, which were believed to protect and watch over individual homes and families. While the Romans did adopt and adapt many elements from Greek religion, such as the names and attributes of some of their gods, it was these native cults that formed the foundation of Roman religious practice. The mystery cults and adoption of cults from other cultures came later in Roman history.
