The parol evidence rule is a legal principle that prevents parties from presenting evidence of prior or contemporaneous negotiations and agreements that contradict, modify, or vary the terms of a written contract, assuming the written contract is intended to be a complete and final expression of their agreement. It does not serve the same purpose as the statute of frauds (which requires certain types of contracts to be in writing to be enforceable), it does not apply if all dealings between the parties are oral (since it concerns written contracts), and it does not allow parties to introduce evidence to change the terms of a written contract (rather, it restricts this).
