Enzymes are known as biological catalysts and nearly all chemical reactions in human cells are catalyzed by enzymes. Enzymes lower the activation energy needed for a reaction to occur, thus making it more likely to happen at cellular temperatures. This increases the efficiency and speed of chemical reactions in the cell. While some enzymes may catalyze more than one chemical reaction, they usually have specific substrates and functions. Enzymes are not used up in the reactions that they catalyze and can be used repeatedly. Some enzymes, such as ATP synthase, do play a role in energy storage, but not in the form of electrons.
