Benjamin Banneker is well known as the first black civilian employee of the American government. He was a free black man who worked as a surveyor on the team that helped to design and lay out the city of Washington D.C. He was also an astronomer, mathematician, and writer who gained recognition for his almanacs and predictions of solar and lunar eclipses. While Banneker did have knowledge of chemistry, he is not primarily known for it. He was not a minister or a military leader during the American Revolution.
