Skilled slaves were often trusted by their masters with important tasks and responsibilities, which gave them a degree of independence and agency that other slaves did not have. This could include being allowed to work without direct supervision, negotiating or communicating with outsiders on behalf of their masters, and occasionally even being able to keep some of their earnings from their skilled labor. While it was still rare for a skilled slave to be granted their freedom, this higher level of autonomy did give them some advantages over their fellow enslaved people.
