Erythrocytes are fully matured cells that have expelled their nucleus and organelles, including chromosomes, during maturation. Reticulocytes are in the final stage of developing into erythrocytes and have a diminished cell nucleus, eventually losing it entirely as they mature into erythrocytes. Erythroblasts, however, are immature red blood cells that still contain a nucleus and thus chromosomes.
