Under the studio system, movies were made on an assembly-line basis, with a division of labor that included producers, directors, screenwriters, actors, and technicians working on multiple films simultaneously. This allowed studios to produce a large quantity of films quickly and efficiently, with each film following a tried-and-true formula designed to appeal to a mass audience. Actors were usually under long-term contracts with a single studio and had little control over the films they appeared in or the characters they played. The studios also had a great deal of control over their private lives, often dictating whom they could date or marry, what political views they could express, and how they should present themselves in public. Producers were usually not hired to direct pictures but were responsible for overseeing the entire filmmaking process, from acquiring scripts to casting actors to editing the final product.
