Dendrites are specialized extensions of the neuron that receive information (in the form of chemical signals) from other neurons and transmit this information to the cell body. Dendrites are covered in tiny projections called spines, which increase the surface area of the dendrite and provide more space for other neurons to make contact. Dendrites conduct information toward the cell body, where it is integrated and processed before being transmitted down the axon. Dendrites do not contain the chromosomes or synthesize new proteins.
