The concept of transference, where the patient projects feelings about figures from their past onto the analyst, is a central mechanism through which psychoanalysis aims to uncover repressed feelings and emotions.

Psychoanalysis has been influential in many areas, including psychology, psychiatry, anthropology, sociology, literature, and art. However, it has also been the subject of criticism, including debates about its scientific validity and efficacy as a treatment method. Despite this, it remains a significant school of thought within the field of mental health.
