Most of the water that exits a leaf comes from the mesophyll cells. These are the cells in the middle of the leaf where photosynthesis occurs, and where the water and nutrients enter the leaf through the xylem. The water then diffuses out of the mesophyll cells and exits the leaf through small pores called stomata on the lower epidermis. Some water may also exit the upper epidermis, but this is a minor pathway compared to the mesophyll cells. Phloem cells do not transport water, but rather sugars and other organic molecules.
