Dorsal root ganglia contain the cell bodies of sensory neurons that bring information from the periphery to the spinal cord. Each ganglion is indeed adjacent to a single vertebra, correlating with the segmental organization of the spinal cord. They do not consist of motor neurons (which are in the ventral horn of the spinal cord), they enter the dorsal part of the spinal cord (not ventral), and they carry information from various types of receptors, including both mechanoreceptors and thermoreceptors.
