Mary Whiton Calkins conducted research on personality, dreams, and memory and was the first woman elected president of the American Psychological Association. She did not found the first psychology laboratory in America at Yale University nor did she study with Sigmund Freud and become the first female psychoanalyst in the United States. Additionally, while Calkins did conduct research on comparative psychology, she is not best known for this work but rather for her contribution to the field of psychology as the first female president of the APA.
