Infants begin to have their first conversations, or vocal exchanges, with familiar adults at several months of age. These vocalizations may not yet consist of actual words, but they are important for the development of language and communication skills. "Jargoning" refers to the use of strings of syllables and sounds that resemble speech, but do not yet constitute actual words. Exchanges with other infants may occur, but are not the primary way that infants begin to learn language. The second year of life is when children typically begin to acquire a significant number of words and form rudimentary sentences, but vocal exchanges with adults begin much earlier.
