The Council of Trent affirmed the Catholic belief that both faith and good works were necessary for salvation. This was in response to Protestant teachings that faith alone, or faith apart from works, was enough for salvation. The Council of Trent also reaffirmed other Catholic beliefs, such as the importance of the sacraments, the authority of the pope and the church, and the validity of indulgences (although it did make some reforms to the practice of granting indulgences). However, the Council did not take the position that confession was optional or that the interpretation of scripture was up to individuals. It also did not mandate the availability of the Bible in the vernacular (although some translations were eventually approved).
