Leukocytes, also known as white blood cells, are nucleated structures. They are responsible for immune responses and defense against antigens and pathogens. They are different from erythrocytes (red blood cells) which contain the pigment hemoglobin and transport oxygen and some carbon dioxide in blood. Leukocytes can be stained to distinguish them from other blood cells, and appear purple or blue under a light microscope. They do not function as determinants of various blood groups which is the role of erythrocytes.
