Night terrors, also known as sleep terror disorder, are different from nightmares and are not a sign of psychological disturbance. They typically occur during non-REM sleep and can involve intense fear, screaming, and physical activity such as thrashing or sweating. While they can be disturbing for a witness, the individual experiencing night terrors usually has no recollection of the event. Night terrors are not necessarily predictive of insomnia in adulthood and do not necessarily have their basis in a traumatic experience in infancy.
