The gay liberation movement was largely inspired by the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, and sought to challenge the discrimination and social stigma faced by the LGBTQ+ community. While women did face some exclusion from the movement initially, many straight women became involved as allies and supporters. The movement was not banned in any states - although LGBTQ+ individuals in some states still faced legal discrimination and persecution.
