The majority of cases that come before the Supreme Court arrive through a writ of certiorari. A litigant files a petition with the Court requesting review of a lower court decision, and if at least four of the nine Justices decide that the case is significant and warrants review, they will grant certiorari and hear the case. Cases can also come before the Court on appeal from a state court, but this is less common. Interest groups may file amicus briefs in support of a particular side in a case, but they do not initiate the case itself. It is not possible to file a lawsuit directly with the Supreme Court.
