Cardiac muscle tissue is striated, similar to skeletal muscle, which gives it a striped appearance under a microscope. This striation is due to the organized arrangement of contractile proteins. Unlike smooth muscle cells, which are spindle-shaped, cardiac muscle cells are branched and connect with one another at specialized junctions called intercalated discs. Cardiac muscle is found only in the heart, not in major blood vessels, and it is under the control of the involuntary nervous system, meaning its activity is not consciously controlled.
