Most of the iron in our blood, and indeed in the Earth itself, was formed in supernovae. These colossal explosions of stars much larger than our Sun generate the extreme conditions necessary for the creation of heavy elements like iron, which are then scattered into space. These materials eventually became part of the gas and dust clouds from which new stars and planets, including Earth, formed.
