Antibiotic-sensitive bacteria can develop mutations or acquire resistance genes that make them resistant to one or more antibiotics. These resistant cells may not survive well in the absence of antibiotics and may revert back to antibiotic sensitivity. However, during their transient state of resistance, they may exhibit resistance to multiple antibiotics. This phenomenon is known as antibiotic cross-resistance.
