A compensating filter is designed to even out the density of an image by absorbing more x-rays in thinner parts of the body and less in thicker parts, thus producing a more uniform exposure. It is used for specific anatomic areas, such as the thoracic spine, where there is a significant difference in thickness between the mediastinum and the lungs. Because the filter absorbs some of the x-rays, an increase in mAs is often required to maintain adequate exposure to the image receptor (IR).
